Cozumel
Cozumel
Jacques Cousteau let the secret out when he declared that the reefs encircling this sleepy island just off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula had some of the world's best diving. Over the years the word has gotten out, but the magic remains. Cozumel has lovely resorts contrasted with empty stretches of beach, all wrapped up in a low-key tropical atmosphere. Come here if you like diving and water-sports, eco-adventures, and sun-washed beaches.

Diver's Wonderland
The reefs that garland Cozumel offer a stunning variety of diving environments, from wall dives to shore dives, with well-charted experiences for every skill level. In addition to the reefs, the porous shoreline is honeycombed with undersea tunnels, arches and caves. You can sign up for underwater photography, ecological and archeological excursions. The Reef Club Cozumel provides snorkeling equipment and offers scuba lessons.
Quiet Beaches
Cozumel's westward beaches, long and often empty, are perfect for relaxing, swimming and getting away from it all. Try Playa del Sol if you prefer to be near restaurants and other amenities. Rent a jeep, and tour back roads 'til you find the perfect stretch of sand.
Exploring
Away from the beaches you can explore jungle outposts and Mayan ruins. Chankanaab Nature Park occupies a saltwater lagoon that harbors a wildlife refuge, archeological statues and carvings, and a botanical garden. At the island's southern tip, Punta Celerain Lighthouse overlooks sand dunes and offers a place to grab a tasty lunch.
San Miguel for Shopping Around
Relaxed and hospitable, Cozumel's only town has interesting shops and a nice after-dark scene. To browse for Mexican specialties like silver jewelry, stroll San Miguel's waterfront and Plaza del Sol.
